SESSION THREE – The Trial Before Pilate: Jesus Is Condemned to Death

The Sanhedrin do not have the authority to carry out capital punishment; they must work with the Roman governor Pontius Pilate and convince him to crucify Jesus. Pilate recognizes that Jesus is innocent, but the chief priests keep pressing him. Pilate sends Jesus off to be scourged and crowned with thorns, hoping that will placate the Jewish leaders. But when his loyalty to Caesar is questioned, Pilate caves and sends the innocent Jesus off to be crucified.
